ATP Synthase Rotary Mechanism

Advanced⚡ Metabolism & BioenergeticsTopic 31 of 53

Summary

Proton flow turns the F0 rotor, driving conformational changes in F1 that make ATP, like a molecular turbine.

In depth

F1 has three catalytic beta subunits cycling through open, loose and tight states as the gamma shaft rotates in 120 degree steps, observed directly by Noji and Yoshida. About 100 revolutions per second, making about 300 ATP per second.

Rotation was filmed using a fluorescent actin filament attached to gamma. Each rotation makes three ATP. The enzyme works reversibly in bacteria.

Example: it is among the smallest rotary motors known.

Frequently asked questions

What is ATP Synthase Rotary Mechanism?

Proton flow turns the F0 rotor, driving conformational changes in F1 that make ATP, like a molecular turbine.

Which area of biology covers ATP Synthase Rotary Mechanism, and how advanced is it?

ATP Synthase Rotary Mechanism is one of the 53 topics in Metabolism & Bioenergetics. It is rated Advanced, so it suits learners who want specialist depth. Related topics in this area include Chemiosmosis, Proton Motive Force, Oxidative Phosphorylation.

Can you give an example of ATP Synthase Rotary Mechanism?

It works in reverse as an ATPase when the gradient fails.

What should I learn before ATP Synthase Rotary Mechanism?

How is ATP Synthase Rotary Mechanism different from Chemiosmosis?

ATP Synthase Rotary Mechanism: Proton flow turns the F0 rotor, driving conformational changes in F1 that make ATP, like a molecular turbine. Chemiosmosis: Protons flowing back through ATP synthase down their gradient drive the formation of ATP. Read both side by side and note what each one explains.

How should I study ATP Synthase Rotary Mechanism step by step?

First, read the summary and write the definition in your own words. Second, read the in-depth section and note any example. Third, compare it with Chemiosmosis and explain the difference aloud. Finally, take the Metabolism & Bioenergetics quiz and come back to this page for any question you miss.
