Hodgkin-Huxley Model

Advanced🧠 NeuroscienceTopic 37 of 54

Summary

A set of equations describing how sodium and potassium conductances produce the action potential.

In depth

Based on giant squid axon experiments (1952, Nobel 1963). Membrane current is the sum of capacitive, Na+, K+ and leak currents with gating variables m, h and n. It predicted threshold, spike shape and refractoriness.

The model reproduced the action potential using measured conductances. It laid the basis of computational neuroscience.

Remember: voltage clamp was a key technique in its development.
