Hydrothermal Vent Ecosystems

Summary

Communities fuelled by chemosynthetic bacteria thrive around seafloor vents without sunlight.

In depth

Discovered in 1977 at the Galápagos Rift. Black smokers release hot (up to 400 °C) fluids with sulfide. Bacteria support giant tube worms (Riftia), clams, mussels and shrimp. Communities are patchy and ephemeral.

Vent animals have special adaptations such as haemoglobin binding sulfide. Vent fields are widely spaced; larvae disperse along ridges. Deep-sea mining poses risks.

Example: Alvin submersible found vent communities in 1977.
