Mendel's Pea Experiments

Beginner🧬 GeneticsTopic 8 of 54

Summary

Gregor Mendel crossed pea plants to discover the basic laws of inheritance in the 1860s.

In depth

Between 1856 and 1863 Mendel crossed pea varieties with seven contrasting traits and counted offspring in thousands of plants. He started with true-breeding lines, crossed them (P), saw only one trait in the F1 and a 3:1 ratio in the F2. He inferred that heritable factors are particulate and come in pairs.

His work was ignored until 1900 when it was rediscovered. He chose peas because they are easy to cross, have clear traits and a short generation time.
