Nephron Function

Intermediate❤️ Human PhysiologyTopic 26 of 51

Summary

Filtration, selective reabsorption and secretion in the nephron form urine.

In depth

Glomerular filtration (high pressure forces small molecules into Bowman's capsule), selective reabsorption (proximal tubule reclaims glucose, amino acids, most water), loop of Henle concentration, and distal tubule and collecting duct adjustments. Urine contains urea, salts and water.

About 99 percent of filtrate is reabsorbed. The kidney filters about 125 mL per minute. Secretion removes drugs and extra H+.

Remember: protein and blood cells should not appear in urine.

Frequently asked questions

What is Nephron Function?

Filtration, selective reabsorption and secretion in the nephron form urine.

Which area of biology covers Nephron Function, and how advanced is it?

Nephron Function is one of the 51 topics in Human Physiology. It is rated Intermediate, so it suits learners who already know the core vocabulary. Related topics in this area include Osmoregulation and ADH, Small Intestine Absorption, Excretory System.

Can you give an example of Nephron Function?

Glucose in urine indicates diabetes.

What should I learn before Nephron Function?

Work through the Beginner topics in Human Physiology first, such as Homeostasis, Tissues and Organs, Skeletal System, then return to Nephron Function. Intermediate topics assume the Beginner vocabulary.

What topics are related to Nephron Function?

The closest topics to Nephron Function are Osmoregulation and ADH, Small Intestine Absorption, Excretory System, Blood Glucose Regulation. Comparing them side by side is a good way to see how the ideas connect.

How can I check that I understand Nephron Function?

Read the summary and the in-depth section, then use the quick check on the interactive lesson for Nephron Function. To practise the whole of Human Physiology, use the Human Physiology quiz.

How is Nephron Function different from Osmoregulation and ADH?

Nephron Function: Filtration, selective reabsorption and secretion in the nephron form urine. Osmoregulation and ADH: Antidiuretic hormone raises kidney water reabsorption when blood is too concentrated. Read both side by side and note what each one explains.

How should I study Nephron Function step by step?

First, read the summary and write the definition in your own words. Second, read the in-depth section and note any example. Third, compare it with Osmoregulation and ADH and explain the difference aloud. Finally, take the Human Physiology quiz and come back to this page for any question you miss.
