Population Density

Intermediate๐ŸŒ EcologyTopic 18 of 54

Summary

The number of individuals per unit area or volume, estimated with quadrats or mark-recapture.

In depth

Counting every individual is rarely possible. Quadrats estimate sessile organisms, mark-recapture (Lincoln index: N = Mร—C/R) estimates mobile animals, and transects sample along gradients. Random sampling avoids bias.

Density can be crude (per total area) or ecological (per habitable area).

Dispersion patterns result from resource distribution and social behaviour. Clumped is most common. Estimating density needs unbiased sampling.

Example: territorial birds tend to be evenly spaced.

Frequently asked questions

What is Population Density?

The number of individuals per unit area or volume, estimated with quadrats or mark-recapture.

Which area of biology covers Population Density, and how advanced is it?

Population Density is one of the 54 topics in Ecology. It is rated Intermediate, so it suits learners who already know the core vocabulary. Related topics in this area include Population, Competition, Species Diversity.

Can you give an example of Population Density?

If 50 fish are marked and 20 of 100 recaptured are marked, N is about 250.

What should I learn before Population Density?

Work through the Beginner topics in Ecology first, such as Ecology, Ecosystem, Biotic and Abiotic Factors, then return to Population Density. Intermediate topics assume the Beginner vocabulary.

What topics are related to Population Density?

The closest topics to Population Density are Population, Competition, Species Diversity, Climate Change Ecology. Comparing them side by side is a good way to see how the ideas connect.

How can I check that I understand Population Density?

Read the summary and the in-depth section, then use the quick check on the interactive lesson for Population Density. To practise the whole of Ecology, use the Ecology quiz.

How is Population Density different from Population?

Population Density: The number of individuals per unit area or volume, estimated with quadrats or mark-recapture. Population: All the individuals of one species living in the same area at the same time. Read both side by side and note what each one explains.

How should I study Population Density step by step?

First, read the summary and write the definition in your own words. Second, read the in-depth section and note any example. Third, compare it with Population and explain the difference aloud. Finally, take the Ecology quiz and come back to this page for any question you miss.
