What is Plant Biology?
Plant biology studies how plants grow, make food, respond to their environment and reproduce. Plants power most land food webs through photosynthesis, so this area links directly to agriculture, ecology and climate.

Light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature can each limit the rate at any time.
๐ฟ Plant BiologyPlant Hormones
Auxin, gibberellin, cytokinin, abscisic acid and ethylene regulate growth, development and responses.
๐ฟ Plant BiologyAuxin and Phototropism
Auxin moves to the shaded side of a shoot, causing cells there to elongate so it bends toward light.
๐ฟ Plant BiologyGravitropism

๐ฟ Plant BiologyPrimary and Secondary Growth
Primary growth lengthens shoots and roots; secondary growth thickens stems into wood.
๐ฟ Plant BiologyMonocots vs Dicots
Monocots have one cotyledon, parallel leaf veins and scattered bundles; dicots have two, netted veins and ringed bundles.
๐ฟ Plant BiologyAlternation of Generations
The plant life cycle alternates between a haploid gametophyte and a diploid sporophyte.
๐ฟ Plant BiologyDouble Fertilisation
In angiosperms one sperm fertilises the egg and the other forms the triploid endosperm.
๐ฟ Plant BiologyPlant Nutrition and Mineral Deficiency
Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are key; deficiencies cause stunted growth or yellow leaves.
๐ฟ Plant BiologyAdvanced topics (23)
C4 Photosynthesis
A pathway that concentrates CO2 in bundle sheath cells to reduce photorespiration in hot climates, as in maize.
๐ฟ Plant BiologyCAM Photosynthesis
Desert plants open stomata at night to fix CO2 into organic acids for daytime use.
๐ฟ Plant BiologyPhotorespiration
Rubisco binds oxygen instead of carbon dioxide, wasting energy and releasing CO2.
๐ฟ Plant BiologyZ-Scheme of Electron Transport
Electrons flow from photosystem II to photosystem I through carriers, pumping protons for ATP synthesis.

Frequently asked questions
How many topics are covered in Plant Biology?
Plant Biology has 56 topics on LearnViz: 15 Beginner, 18 Intermediate and 23 Advanced. Each one has its own page with an explanation, use cases, FAQs and related topics.
Where should a beginner start in Plant Biology?
Start with the Beginner topics, such as Plant Kingdom, Photosynthesis, Chlorophyll. Once those terms feel familiar, move on to the Intermediate topics.
What are the most advanced topics in Plant Biology?
The Advanced level includes C4 Photosynthesis, CAM Photosynthesis, Photorespiration, Z-Scheme of Electron Transport, Cyclic Photophosphorylation. Read the Beginner and Intermediate topics first, because the Advanced ones build on them.
Can I test my knowledge of Plant Biology?
Yes. The Plant Biology quiz asks questions generated from the topic explanations, and the timed tests on LearnViz cover the same material.
Do plants respire as well as photosynthesise?
Yes. Plants respire all the time, using oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis only exceeds respiration while there is enough light.
If plants make their own food, why do they need minerals?
Photosynthesis makes sugars from carbon dioxide and water. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other minerals are still needed to build proteins, nucleic acids and membranes.
Why do shoots bend towards light?
Phototropism is driven by auxin, which collects on the shaded side. Those cells elongate more, bending the shoot towards the light.
