Z-Scheme of Electron Transport

Advanced🌿 Plant BiologyTopic 37 of 56

Summary

Electrons flow from photosystem II to photosystem I through carriers, pumping protons for ATP synthesis.

In depth

Light energy excites P680 in PSII; the electron passes via plastoquinone, the cytochrome b6f complex and plastocyanin to PSI (P700), is excited again and goes to ferredoxin and NADP+ reductase. The energy diagram is zigzag-shaped.

The names P680 and P700 refer to wavelengths of maximum absorption. Photosystem II oxidises water using a manganese cluster. The proton gradient is built across the thylakoid membrane.

Example: herbicides such as DCMU block electron flow beyond PSII.
